A flesh-eating parasite has been detected in the US for the first time since 1966. Known as the New World screwworm (NWS), the parasite was confirmed in Texas after spreading north through Mexico over the past year. The parasite lays eggs in open wounds on animals and, in rare cases, humans. The larvae hatch within hours and feed on living tissue. While the risk to people is low, infestations can cause painful wounds and serious infections if not treated promptly. #parasite #usa #news
